VOR: BRUNEL BETTER MAPFRE ON TUESDAY

Team Brunel was able to get one over their rivals Team MAPFRE on Tuesday, according to reports. Peter Burling played a crucial role for Brunel, with their tactical late night sailing helping them over their close rival. This just confirms that the Volvo Ocean Race is a different ball game entirely.

Burling and MAPFRE’s Blair Tuke are teammates in Americas Cup and Olympic sailing but they are on the fronts of completely different teams in the VOC and this was obvious on Tuesday. Burling said both teams battled late into Tuesday nightas they sought for an advantage over the other.

They were both coming up on the doldrums as they sailed closer to the equator from Hong Kong to Auckland. The aim was to get positional advantage as they sail through the ‘dangerous’ area revered for slow sailing. Performance in this part of the race had an impact on the final result, so it was crucial for the teams.

Burling said Brunel was stuck a boat behind MAPFRE who didn’t want to let them go over the top. He revealed that they battled for about half an hour but then they managed to do so at the end.

As at lunchtime on Wednesday, Brunel wasin third place, behind Sun Hung Kai/Scallywagand AzkoNobel. They were barely two kilometres ahead of Dongfeng and MAPFRE who were chasing hotly from behind. Team Turn on the Tide was way back in the fleet, about 135km behind the fleet lead.

AzkoNobel skipper Chris Nicholson maintained that despite their lead a lot could happen before the fleet reach Auckland. They were a few days out from reaching the doldrums, with the effects expected north of the equator. For now Kiwis Brad Ferrand and Justin Ferris, also team members of AzkoNobel are 22km ahead of the pack.

Ms Potter told that Thomas Dibbs used to take the then-governor out on every Sunday. Well, it was really a great way of living that time. She remembered it quite well seeing it go up and down the harbor; she believes that it was a much more gracious life back then. (more…)

Financial Conditions Look Bleak

Emirates Team New Zealand is going through a rough period in their career as they are struggling to get the funds for the Volvo Ocean Race and the round the world race for the upcoming season. In an interview with the coach Grant Dalton he agreed that that it was not a good time for the team but was confident about the team’s unity during this time. He also said that participating in such championships is a pride for all the teams and with the team they have they would certainly want to be in the championships this year. He is looking forward to competing in them with his team however the money required to register for this has not yet been collected. The coach has taken the initiative of getting funds for the team but he says that there is still $27 million left to collect so the journey would not be a smooth one for them.

The mountain to climb will be a steep one considering the fact that the team had to change their base recently from Halsey St to Wynyard Quarter in Auckland. This was a big blow to the team because it is always difficult to change the base camp as it involves money and time. But Dalton is still hopeful that things will change soon. The crew for the New Zealand is all set and it is only the money that is keeping the team away. The team will be sponsored by a Spanish footwear company named Camper but the contract will only be for the Volvo Ocean Race and also for the America Cup for this season. The team would be have to get a new contract or extend the contract if they happen to participate in the round the world championship.

Bolling Plans Round-Trip

Bolling has always been vocal about his comfort quotient with water than land. The leading sailor is now all set to sail on for a round trip across the Lankan country in a non-motor sail boat.

However, Jeremy won’t be alone in his 14 ft sail boat on the expedition. In fact, he would be accompanied by a considerable rotating crew that would be spearheaded by the seasoned sailor only. Bolling’s boat for the Lanka expedition has been aptly named as “Sail Sri Lanka”. The Lanka expedition is something that hasn’t been attempted by the sailor earlier would, quite literally, send him to unchartered waters.

The expedition would start on February 19, 2014.

It would undoubtedly land him amidst varied mental and physical obstacles, of which one of the most crucial is that he would have to stay away on ocean for 7 weeks.

“It’s a dream of lifetime for me & I was at last able to pass through it given the peace it has dawned on me. It would be the 1st time that anybody would be sailing around Lanka in non-motor boat. Thus, it’s real challenge”, said Bolling while asked to speak a few words about his upcoming expedition.

“We’ve to attempt & manage the 2 monsoon conditions to northeast and southwest. At present, it’s the time fort northeast monsoon that ensures a clam west coast. Thus, we are looking forward to start in February & get right to Kankasanthurai”, added in Jeremy. “Then, we would wait till eastern coast settles down & sail along it. When the southern part of the Indian Ocean seems relaxed, there’s a 2-week opportunity that we are trying to capitalize to return to Galle, within April 6.”

In short, Jeremy would be logging around twenty nautical miles per day.
